Keith Baker along with Monte Cook Are Instructing Classes at Dungeon Master Academy

Beginning in 2018, a specialized event organizer has been running deeply engaging experiences where professional dungeon masters lead Dungeons & Dragons games in historic castles in the UK and at an American castle venue. The comprehensive packages are especially popular among forever DMs who seldom have the moment to actually play themselves, and they often seek advice from the pros on topics ranging from improv and puzzle design to handling difficult situations at the table.

In response, the organizers began designing a organized method to address these questions, which led to the founding of DMU. The inaugural event is set for the start of 2026 at a university in Atlanta.

“There are numerous digital guides on virtually any subject and gain significant knowledge, but the idea was that nothing truly replaces face-to-face interaction in the company of fellow DMs, where direct communication with expert teachers and your peers likely in a similar position and aim to enhance their abilities,” noted the program's dean.

Available Classes and Pricing Tiers

Game masters can opt for packages ranging from just under $1,000 to $2,500, according to the degree of interaction they desire with the professionals. The base tier includes one of four courses:

  • Foundational Skills: Focuses on the fundamentals of leading a game.
  • Long-Term Game Planning: Is dedicated to building persistent adventures.
  • Universe Design: Highlights the crafting of environments.
  • Career Building: Designed for DMs who want to learn more about the gaming industry.

All workshops includes multiple sessions of training split over two days.

“The workshops are structured so that you walk away with tangible results, probably greater confidence, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl said. “They’re not just lectures and they go beyond recorded content. These workshops that you can join, learn from, and then go right back home the week after and implement in your home campaign.”

Seasoned Educators

Many sessions are instructed by duo of instructors. Universe creation is taught by an industry veteran and Keith Baker, both teaching the art of worldbuilding.

Industry advancement presents four different teachers, such as an author on gaming puzzles, a podcast co-host, and an early professional game master. The expanded teaching staff is meant to provide specialized information to attendees with particular aims.

“Some of them aim to start their own live gameplay show and display their adventures with the world, several aim to release and develop fresh ideas,” Carl stated. “Several only seek to ask, How do I get to be a DM at something like a castle event? What are the skills that I need? Is this achievable?

Premium Packages

A $1.5K enhanced option provides access to a welcome reception, a welcome gift pack, and a brief one-on-one appointment with a teacher. This constitutes the inaugural DMU session, though the company has previously run similar events during breaks between game sessions at their immersive experiences.

“You could almost run an entire weekend just on one-on-one meetings for career game masters,” Carl mentioned. “It's unclear if that’s the optimal application of all participants' schedule – I believe the structured learning and the lab work is extremely important – but I believe it’s going to be among the most sought-after parts of the program.”

The twenty-five hundred dollar premium option includes an 60-minute private session and the opportunity to lead a session for several participants plus an instructor, who will then give comments and guidance.

“The goal is for the teacher to assess whatever the DM is concerned with: I have difficulty with spontaneous decisions or I get blocked in certain battle scenarios. Could I demonstrate a scenario for you and get feedback on what my strengths and weaknesses are?” Carl said. “Alternatively they want to obtain critique and advice on a definite universe that they’ve been developing.”

Coming Developments

Responses from the inaugural session will help determine subsequent DMU events. Carl suggested that possible changes could include expanding one-on-one sessions, making it longer to a longer period, or experimenting with varied class arrangements.

“I anticipate that we do this regularly,” Carl expressed. “I really want to see several DMU sessions in a calendar year, in different cities, and in multiple countries. The reception has been really terrific. We’re very happy with current developments and I think it would be wonderful to be able to do this in conjunction with major events.”
