Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
